Areas of cultivation Bobal is grown mainly in the provinces of Valencia, Cuenca and Albacete in eastern central Spain. It is particularly important in the Utiel-Requena and Manchuela DOs, Where it is the dominant variety. Total plantings in Spain in 2007 were officially over 210000 acres but the real total is probably a good deal higher.
Characteristics of the wine obtained from this grape variety The wines can be slightly rustic but the best of them are deeply coloured and smooth. Bobal has traditionally been relegated to bulk-wine production but producers working at higher altitudes have been taking this variety more seriously and giving it the attention it deserves particulatly since it retains well the acidity, the alcohol gradation, and produces well-structured, velvety and fresh reds.
