Areas of cultivation Souzao, also known as Vinho, is a grape variety that originated in Portugal, specifically in the Minho regions. The Vinho Verde region grows both white wine and red wines, with forty percent of its produce are red wines. The vineyards that grow the Vinh"o grape spread towards the region of Douro, where the grape was then referred to as Souzao. Although the Souzao grape originated in Portugal, it is most grown in California, Australia, Spain and South Africa. In Spain, it is grown in the region of Galicia wherein it is referred to by several names such as Sousao, Souzao and Souson.
Characteristics of the wine obtained from this grape variety The Souzao wine possesses a coarse taste with hints of raisin. Souzao wine from Australia is often made into table wines and port style wines. It also offers good acid structure and a high alcohol level. The Souzao wine offers a pleasant palate taste with light tannins. Its texture is satiny and smooth. It has an aroma of fruits and wood.
Notes The Souzao wine is best paired with curred meat or cheese. It also goes well with seafood such as grilled fish or cod. In Europe, the Souzao wine win matched with roasted goat or cabrito assado no forno. In the United States, Americans prefer to match this win with Cajun beef quesadillas.
