Information about Albariño

Grape variety Albariño
Synonyms Albarino, Alvarinho, Albarin blanco, Cainho Branco.
Grape colour White grape
Variety Autochthonous
Vigour Good
Areas of cultivation Spain, Portugal, California, Australia.
Characteristics of the wine obtained from this grape variety The grape is noted for its distinctive aroma, very similar to that of Viognier, Gewurztraminer, and Petit Manseng, suggesting apricot and peach. The wine produced is unusually light, and generally high in acidity. Its thick skins and large number of pips can cause residual bitterness.
Notes A French expert visiting Australia raised questions in 2008, and DNA testing confirmed that the grapes are in fact French Savagnin. Almost all wine in Australia labelled as Albarino is Savagnin.
