History The cultivation of the vine was already practiced centuries before the birth of Christ, from the first Celtic, Gallic, and Cisalpine populations that populated northern Italy before the domination of ancient Rome, as evidenced by numerous fossil finds of grapevines and roots in the area. With the Roman conquest, the cultivation and commercialization of the Piacentini wines was much more extensive and developed, as evidenced by numerous Latin documents, including a quotation from the Senate of Rome, originated in a political dispute between Marco Tullio Cicero and Lucio Calpurnio Pisone, native to Piacenza. The development and trade of Piacenza wines also reached France in 1200, and in 1391, in the "corpus" of the ancient statutes of the municipality of Piacenza, the first severe rules were laid down against wine fraud.
