History |
The variety is thought to have originated in Campania, but other researchers have suggested a Greek origin. Pallagrello Nero was once a favorite of Ferdinand IV, the Bourbon King of Naples and Sicily, who had the variety planted (along with its sibling Pallagrello Bianco) in his famed Vigna del Ventaglio, or Fan Vineyard. The phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th Century was thought to have sent Pallagrello Nero to extinction, but a local grape grower discovered the variety in the 1990s and replanted it, with a handful of other producers following suit. |
