History The vine Vernaccia di Oristano is present in Sardinia, as recalled by the name in the province of Oristano, since ancient times. Its origins remain unknown, though some think it has come to the island in Roman times, but many consider it an authentic Sardinian native. His name could come from Latin "ver", "Primavera" or "vitis vernacula", or "home", as reported by Lucio Giunio Moderato Columella in his work "De re rustica". According to others, the term could be derived more recently and was traced back to the French-born Grenache vine or its Catalan Garnacha synonym. Vernaccia di Oristano shares the name with Vernaccia di San Gimignano, but the two varieties are absolutely distinct from the ampelographic point of view.
Ampelographic features Leaf: medium or small, orbicular, trilobate; Petiole breast in open limb and also with clave and with closed edges, on average deep; Lateral veins above V open or semi-closed, shallow; Lower lateral breasts, when there are, to V, open, shallow; Top leaf glabra, green load, slightly bulleted and wrinkled; Almost whitish page for the cotone tomato that covers it; Revolving lobby, with corner at the dome sumptuous in the central lobe and right in the lateral ones; Main rib on the bottom green side, sometimes slightly blurred with pink, lanugginose; Regular teeth, in 1 or 2 series, with medium-sized teeth, on margins, medium-width. Bunch: almost small, cylindrical-conical, semi-tight; Medium-length and thicker peduncle, semi-woody; Mid-length, slender and green color pedicel; Average, verrucous, small, green; Small, short, greenish-yellowish brush. Acino: medium size or almost small, round and even slightly sub-round; Peel of medium thickness and medium consistency, of greenish-yellowish color with golden nuances and grits, very pruinosa; Just navel navel; Melted pulp, with a neutral taste, acidulous; Spacing of the middle-length peduncle.
Characteristics of the wine obtained from this grape variety From the verniccia of Oristano, an amber yellow wine is obtained, with very intense and ethereal aroma, with penetrating characteristic oxidation notes. The taste structure is robust and rich in great softness, and the strong perceived sensations are also based on the remarkable alcoholic component that, together with all the other extractive elements, contributes to determining an important intense aromatic persistence.
Notes Resistance to adversity: meteoric: lacking in late frost; To diseases: somewhat sensitive to mildew and oesophageal disease.
