Galicia white wines

The Galicia is very famous in the world thanks to the way of Santiago de Compostela, always crowded by more tourists, the place lends itself very well to the cultivation of the vineyards. The Galicia in fact, is located in the north-west part of the Iberian peninsula on the border with Portugal (in the south) and with France (in the northern area). Its lands overlook the Atlantic Ocean and are influenced by the sea both geologically and climatically. The climate is in fact characterized by humidity and abundant rainfall. Galicia is divided into four provinces, namely Lugo, Ourense, Coruña and Pontevedra. To these provinces correspond five denominations of origin, which are: Rías Baixas, Valdeorras, Monterrei, Ribeiro and Ribeira Sacra. The most important names from the qualitative and productive point of view of Galicia are Ribeiro, Rías Baixas and Valdeorras. The lands of Ribeiro have a climate with Atlantic temperatures, the geology of the land is more acidic and calcareous for all the 3000 hectares. The crops and vines are: Loureira, Treixadura, Torrontes (white berry), Brancellao and Caiño tinto (red berry). The taste is elegant, fresh, light, very aromatic and with a lively acidity. Rías Baixas means low fjords, the climate of the land is maritime and Atlantic. The land covers 4000 hectares, is granitic and the vines are albariño, caiño tinto (red berry), torrontes, caiño blanco (white berry and brancellao). The taste is intense and fruity. The Valdeorras is the eastern side of Galicia, the main grape is Godello, a persistent, fruity and juicy white berry vine.

Climate and soil The backbone of the region is given by an ancient crystalline massif culminating at almost 1800 m, sloping towards the Atlantic coast and engraved by river valleys; these valleys are submerged by the marine waters in their terminal part, so that the coast is very jagged, with numerous wide inlets whose local name, rías, has become in common use in the geomorphological nomenclature. The climate is typically temperate oceanic, strongly influenced by the Atlantic, with slight annual temperature variations and abundant rainfall, almost always above 1000 mm per year, often near the coast, close to 2000 mm. Among the rivers, short but rich in water, the main one is the Miño. The population thickens in the coastal provinces of La Coruña and, above all, of Pontevedra, while it is rarefied in the internal provinces (Lugo and Orense). The most notable urban centers are Vigo and La Coruña.
History The region, already inhabited in the Eneolithic Age, around the 6th century B.C. it was colonized by Celtic populations. The Romans conquered it in 137-136 BC. and the subjugation of it all only under Augustus. From 411 d.C. it was submitted to the Swabians, then (585) to the Visigoths. Incorporated in the Kingdom of Asturias (718), but occupied by the Arabs (734), it supported the reconquest action. The 9th and 10th centuries they were marked by Norman raids. With the dismemberment of the Asturian state, Galicia was linked to the León (914) and in 1037 became part of Castile. For short periods it was erected in an independent kingdom (1063-72 and 1110). The southern part, established in the county since the 11th century, constituted the original nucleus of the Kingdom of Portugal. Against the Napoleonic domination Galicia rose up forming in 1808 a revolutionary government junta. The autonomist authorities, developed starting from the 19th century, had a first expression in the statute of autonomy of 1936, blocked however by the civil war and the Francoist dictatorship. A new statute of autonomy, passed on the basis of the 1978 Constitution and approved by referendum in 1980, has provided Galicia with its own legislative and executive bodies, with wide jurisdiction.
Typical products The best known Galician wines, gathered under the name of Rias Baixas, differ greatly from Spanish stereotypes; they are in fact delicate, bright and aromatic white wines, which perfectly match the seafood, the specialty of the region. This wet and verdant corner until recently was basically poor and ignored by the rest of the country. The most enterprising floats have emigrated, but have remained very attached to the tiny land lots received in inheritance. Also because of the geographic isolation of Galiza, only in the nineteen years these wines have found a market ready to take them out of the region.
Typical dishes Galicia is a land of great seafaring traditions and millenarian links with the land, agriculture and pastoralism; elements that translate among other things into an extraordinary cultural and gastronomic heritage. One of the best known and exported local products is the "pimiento del padron", a small green pepper with a singular characteristic: on the same plant spicy specimens coexist with other sweets, indistinguishable from one another. Of course there is no shortage of traditional desserts, prepared according to simple recipes and using the typical ingredients of these lands. La Tarta de Santiago is the most famous specialty, a savory and delicate dessert prepared with almond paste, sugar, cinnamon and lemon. It is always decorated with a dusting of powdered sugar that allows you to easily draw the cross of Santiago, symbol of the saint most important in the region. Another very common dessert is filloa, a kind of crepe prepared with flour, eggs and water (although in some cases milk, broth and even pork blood are added!). It goes perfectly with honey, sugar, cream or with a few drops of aguardiente.
