Chateau Le Boscq (Dourthe)

Château Le Boscq features among the great classics of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The reputation of Château Le Boscq dates back to the conquest for the Medoc vineyard, when in 1749, Thomas Barton, founder of one of the first negociant companies in Bordeaux, took over the tenancy at Château Le Boscq. For more than 30 years he dedicated his life to making wine of a quality repeatedly recognised, sometimes even at Cru Classé level, within the different classifications established by the courtiers and négociants in Bordeaux.

At the end of the 19th century, Jean Grazilhon, a loyal servant on the estate, whose grandfather was previously the estate's steward working under Thomas Barton, performed a remarkable job of managing the estate. He went on to become its owner in 1889, and commissioned the existing château in 1891, to replace the former Master's house, which in his view was not in keeping with the quality of this magnificent terroir.

This majestic residence enjoys views overlooking the vines on one side of the building, while the other boasts superb views of the River Gironde estuary. For more than 30 years, he strived to produce high quality wines, paving the way for Château Le Boscq to be awarded Cru Bourgeois status in 1932.

The successive crises of the 20th century left this magnificent property somewhat neglected for several decades until its acquisition in 1995 by Dourthe. From this point forwards, there was a clear objective: to exploit the full potential of the terroir and vineyard and transform Château Le Boscq into one of the finest wines in Saint-Estèphe.
